One of the top fitness fads that you see these days is the fitness watch. Almost everybody seems to have one. They are supposed to provide you an indication regarding the calories you have spent, the distance that you have covered by walking and running, and also your heartbeat. However, it is now being said that they can be off by as much as 34 beats for each minute. This has set off alarm bells unlike anything. In fact, doctors are now asking people with heart issues to not wear these watches since more often than not they regard these as the ultimate and wrong readings can cause some real concern.
Results of a study
At a test done recently a number of such watches were examined and analysed. This included the Apple Watch as well. 50 healthy individuals who frequent the gym on a regular basis acted as the volunteers for the test. Majority of the watches were found to be okay especially when the volunteers were resting. However, it was during the 18 minute workout session that the readings were found to be really awry. The more vigorous the workouts became, the more erratic the readings were. It was a conventional chest strap monitor that performed better than all the watches. This monitor was much like an echocardiogram (ECG) machine.
It was seen that the Apple Watch was the most reliable among all the watches that were tested during the session. Other watches tested in the said session included prominent names such as Fitbit Blaze, TomTom Spark Cardio, and Garmin Forerunner 235. As per researchers, the variations happen because these watches only measure blood flow. They never take into account the activity of the heart. The study was done in Cleveland, Ohio by Dr Marc Gillinov, a cardiac surgeon. According to him, these devices could under and overestimate the heart rate of a person in equal measure.

In this day and age of increasing technology and even greater dependence on the same it is easy to forget that if we can keep things simple we will all be happy and fine. Instead of trying to take control of our life by using as much technology as we can get our hands on and getting fooled at every turn it is always better to live a natural and healthy life by following some simple steps and using one’s common sense.
